Tinubu Expands Nigerian Army to Combat Insecurity

President Bola Tinubu approved the expansion of the Nigerian Army from eight to 12 divisions and the recruitment of an additional 28,000 personnel as part of efforts to enhance national security. This decision, announced on Thursday, has garnered broad support from governors, traditional rulers, and security experts, who view it as a crucial step in addressing Nigeria's escalating insecurity.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) and Kwara State Governor, Alhaji AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, described this expansion as the largest in modern history, reflecting the President's commitment to safeguarding lives and property. The NGF expressed confidence that these initiatives would bolster counterterrorism and anti-banditry efforts.

Additionally, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, called for increased private sector investment in national security. In a related operation, troops in Yobe State apprehended five suspected kidnappers during an intelligence-led mission.
