Governors Propose State Police Framework to Enhance Security

The Nigeria Governors' Forum (NGF) has submitted a document proposing a framework for state police to the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu. This submission was confirmed by the NGF Chairman and Kwara State Governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, during a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at his Ikoyi residence in Lagos.

The proposal is expected to be forwarded to the National Assembly for legislative consideration. The governors emphasized their commitment to strengthening collaboration with security forces to combat terrorism and improve infrastructure for citizen welfare.

The discussions surrounding the state police framework have been contentious, sparking national debate about its potential to enhance security and bring policing closer to local communities. Critics have raised concerns about the possibility of abuse within the system.

Additionally, the new Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, has been inaugurated to develop a model for establishing state police.
