Amaechi Visits El-Rufai After His Release from ICPC Custody

Rotimi Amaechi, the former Minister of Transport, visited former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai after his temporary release from custody by the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC). El-Rufai had been detained since February 19, 2026, on 10 counts of alleged corruption, including money laundering and misappropriation of public property, to which he pleaded not guilty.

His release occurred shortly after the ICPC detained him for 48 hours, and Amaechi criticized the commission for releasing El-Rufai without a court order. During his detention, El-Rufai focused on spiritual and intellectual activities, as confirmed by his son, Bashir El-Rufai.

The release was also timed with the illness of El-Rufai's mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, who was in Cairo, Egypt. The court has scheduled a hearing for El-Rufai's bail application on March 31.
