Groom and Father Arrested for Drunk Driving Before Wedding

A wedding planned for April 5, 2026, in Newcastle was abruptly canceled after the groom and his father were arrested for drunk driving just hours before the ceremony. The arrests took place during an overnight road traffic enforcement operation conducted by the Kwazulu Natal Department of Transport, which led to the apprehension of 45 motorists across various parts of Kwazulu Natal.

The spokesperson for the department, Ndabezinhl Sibiya, confirmed that the operation targeted individuals suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol. The enforcement exercise included individuals from various professional backgrounds, such as lecturers, safety managers, teachers, nurses, pharmacists, municipal liaison officers, and students.

The cancellation of the wedding sparked widespread online reactions due to the unusual circumstances surrounding the event. Siboniso Duma, a member of the executive council for transport in Kwazulu Natal, reaffirmed the government's strict enforcement policies and warned that individuals caught violating traffic laws would face legal consequences.
