Civil Society Group Commends Maikalangu's Re-election

A civil society organization has commended the re-election of Hon. Christoph Zakka Maikalangu as chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) following the FCT area council elections held on February 21, 2026.

The organization, led by Comrade Abdulwahab Ekekhid, described the election outcome as largely peaceful and credible. They monitored the electoral process in collaboration with independent observer organizations, emphasizing the importance of electoral integrity over partisan interests.

Despite the positive assessment, Ekekhid noted concerns regarding voter apathy and urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to enhance voter awareness campaigns to improve turnout in future elections. Maikalangu's victory, achieved by a wide margin, reflects his grassroots connection and people-centered governance approach.

The group also acknowledged the political sophistication of the FCT and reiterated the need for young leaders to strengthen democracy and empower citizens. The elections resulted in the All Progressives Congress (APC) winning five councils, while the People's Democratic Party (PDP) secured one.
