NIWU Calls for Clarity on Sharia Law in Nigeria

The Ndi Igbo Worldwide Union (NIWU) has urged the Federal Government and National Assembly to resolve the ambiguity surrounding the existence of Sharia law alongside common law in Nigeria. In a statement issued by NIWU President Benjamin Nwankwo and Secretary Charl Edemuzo, the group emphasized that the two legal systems cannot coexist in a modern nation.

They referenced a U.S. congressional report on Christian persecution in Nigeria, which suggested the abolition of Sharia law in northern states. NIWU criticized the current configuration of Nigeria, stating it is unsustainable and leads to violence against non-Muslims.

They called for either the complete adoption of a common law system or the legitimization of Islamic enclaves as separate entities. The group highlighted the historical context of religious persecution and the need for clarity in the legal framework to prevent further conflict.

They warned that ignoring these issues could lead to a fractured state and urged lawmakers to act decisively.
