UNIBEN Student Shot Dead by Suspected Cultists

On Sunday evening, a 200-level part-time student at the University of Benin, identified as Alexand, was shot dead by suspected cultists shortly after completing an examination. The incident occurred at the main gate of the university's Ugbowo campus along Benin-Lagos Road.

A viral video showed unidentified students chasing another student with a cutlass, linked to a dispute over an internet scam. The attack involved an unregistered GLK vehicle that intercepted Alexand's vehicle, from which masked gunmen emerged and opened fire at close range, targeting the driver's side.

Alexand was a part-time student in the Political Science department and had just finished writing an exam when the attack occurred. Two other individuals, including a female, sustained gunshot injuries and were rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital for treatment.

The Edo State Police Command spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the incident and stated that a full-scale investigation is underway to identify and apprehend the perpetrators. The university management has distanced itself from the violence, suggesting the attack is linked to cult-related activities outside the campus.
