Hantavirus Outbreak Triggers COVID-Style Health Measures

A hantavirus outbreak linked to the MV Hondiu has led to the implementation of strict health protocols similar to those during the COVID-19 pandemic. Passengers aboard the vessel are undergoing health surveillance as three individuals have shown severe symptoms.

The World Health Organization confirmed cases related to the hantavirus, which is typically transmitted by rodents. Mónica García, Spain's health minister, announced plans for the ship to dock in the Canary Islands, despite local officials, including Fernando Clavijo, questioning the decision due to health concerns.

Passengers have been instructed to maintain social distancing, wear masks, and adhere to strict hygiene practices. Aaron Motsoaledi, South Africa's health minister, reported that 62 contacts have been identified, with 42 already traced and monitored.

The investigation is ongoing, with authorities examining whether the virus was contracted during earlier travel in South America. Symptoms of hantavirus can include fatigue, fever, and gastrointestinal distress.
