C’River Government Urges Landlords to Cut House Rents

The Cross River State Government has made an appeal to landlords across the state to show compassion and restraint regarding what it termed “frequent and excessive increases in house rents.” This appeal was articulated by Erasmus Ekpang, the Commissioner for Lands, during a press conference held on Monday in Calabar. Ekpang expressed concerns over the rising cost of accommodation, which is exacerbating the struggles of residents already facing increased prices for food, transportation, and other essential needs.

He urged property owners to reconsider steep rent hikes, emphasizing the need to prioritize tenants' welfare and avoid arbitrary increases that could displace families from their homes. Ekpang highlighted that many households are struggling to balance accommodation costs with other necessities, and he called on landlords to view their properties not just as investments but as homes that provide dignity and stability for families.
