Cross River State Launches Agricultural Credit Initiatives

On 11 September 2026, the Cross River State Agricultural and Loan Board, led by Chairman Sir Toni Ikpeme, announced initiatives to introduce agricultural grants, loans, and credit guarantee schemes across all 18 Local Government Areas in Cross River State. This initiative aims to alleviate financing challenges faced by smallholder farmers, cooperatives, women, youth, agribusinesses, processors, and input suppliers.

Sir Ikpeme emphasized the importance of financial support in realizing the potential of farmers who possess land and knowledge but lack capital. He stated that the board's efforts align with Governor Bassey Otu's "People First" agenda, aiming to transform agriculture in the state.

The board plans to implement an Agricultural Loan Disbursement Framework with specific eligibility criteria and accountability measures in the coming weeks. Hon. Bette Philip Obi, Chairman of the Cross River State House Committee on Agriculture, pledged legislative support for these initiatives, highlighting their importance in empowering farmers and enhancing agricultural productivity.
