Cross River Orders Mechanics Off Calabar Roads for Order

The Cross River State government has mandated that street mechanics and spare parts dealers operating along major roads in Calabar relocate due to their activities being classified as a public nuisance. This directive was issued by the Commissioner for Environment, Mensah Bassey, during a meeting with leaders of the mechanics and auto spare parts dealers.

Bassey highlighted that mechanics working without designated workshops on Bedwell, King Duke, White House, and Victor Akan streets in Calabar South Local Government Area have contributed to traffic obstruction and the degradation of public infrastructure. He clarified that the order is not aimed at legitimate auto spare parts businesses but seeks to separate spare parts trading from mechanic activities on public streets.

Mechanics are required to move to designated workshops for better regulation, while spare parts dealers are urged to maintain clean and orderly surroundings. Felix Odigwe, Chairman of the Auto Parts Dealers Association, acknowledged the government's concerns and committed to cooperating in maintaining cleanliness and order in their business areas.
