Hausa Language and Culture Key to African Unity, Says Gov

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf described the Hausa language and culture as vital pillars of African identity, unity, and development in a message for the 2026 International Hausa Day. The statement, issued by his spokesman Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, noted that this year's theme, "Our Culture, Our Future," encourages reflection on preserving language, history, and traditions.

Governor Yusuf acknowledged the growth of International Hausa Day, initiated in 2015 by journalist Abdulbaki Jari, into a global platform for promoting Hausa culture. He praised the selection of Daura, the cradle of Hausa civilization, as the celebration's center and mentioned the planned Durbar event showcasing Hausa traditions.

The Governor welcomed participation from Hausa communities in approximately 30 countries, including the United States and Türkiye. He urged young Hausa people to embrace their heritage while adopting modern technology.

Yusuf stressed the importance of preserving indigenous languages for strengthening African identity and called for greater intra-African cooperation and peaceful coexistence.
