Henry Nwosu, 1980 AFCON Winner, Dies at 62

Henry Nwosu, a prominent figure in Nigerian football and a member of the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winning team, died at the age of 62 on Saturday morning at Lagos Hospital. Nwosu was the youngest player in the 1980 AFCON squad, participating in the final match and contributing significantly to Nigeria's football history.

He scored a remarkable goal during a FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Guinea, which helped Nigeria qualify for the final round against Algeria. Nwosu also played in the 1984 and 1988 AFCON tournaments.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), through its General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, expressed profound grief over his passing, highlighting Nwosu's immense contributions as both a player and coach.

Chief Adegboyega Onigbinde, a former NFF Technical Director and two-time head coach of the Nigerian senior men's team, also mourned Nwosu, emphasizing the legacy he leaves behind. Nwosu's career included stints with Nigerian clubs and he was known for his exceptional dribbling and creative vision.
