NCC to Introduce Cheaper Smartphones in Nigeria

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), represented by Executive Vice Chairman Dr. Aminu Maida, announced plans to make cheaper smartphones available in Nigeria.

This initiative comes as the price of smartphones has reached unprecedented levels, with entry-level devices starting at approximately N100,000. Mid-range devices like the Infinix Hot 60 Pro and Tecno Spark 40 Pro are priced between N150,000 and N250,000, while high-end devices exceed N1,000,000.

Factors contributing to these high costs include currency depreciation, inflation, and import duties. The NCC aims to address these issues and facilitate the introduction of affordable smartphones, noting a significant shift towards 4G usage among consumers.

Dr. Maida emphasized the importance of transparency and compliance within the telecommunications sector, highlighting ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and public awareness.

The NCC has set a 24-month compliance deadline for industry stakeholders regarding USSD debt and other operational challenges.
