Hit-and-Run Driver Kills Pedestrian in Anambra State

A hit-and-run incident occurred on July 25 along the Onitsha-Awka Expressway in Anambra State, where a male pedestrian was killed by a tipper truck driven against traffic. The driver fled the scene immediately after the accident.

Emeka Konti-Okonkwo, Managing Director of the Anambra State Road Traffic Management Agency, confirmed that the vehicle was later tracked and intercepted at Upper Iweka in Onitsha. The agency impounded the vehicle and has referred the case to the police for further investigation and potential prosecution.

Konti-Okonkwo expressed regret over the loss of life due to the driver's recklessness and highlighted the dangers of ‘one-way’ driving, which he identified as a leading cause of road crashes in the state. He emphasized the need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and noted the challenges faced by his officers in enforcing the law against influential individuals seeking leniency for offenders.
