Minority House Members Walk Out Over Electoral Act Changes

On Tuesday, minority members of the House of Representatives in Nigeria staged a walkout from the Green Chamber in protest against the adoption of a new clause in the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2025. This amendment, which involves the manual transmission of election results, was described by the opposition lawmakers, led by Chinda, as anti-people.

Earlier discussions had agreed on real-time electronic transmission of results. The opposition accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of manipulating the legislative process to impose manual transmission, which they argue could lead to electoral result manipulation.

During the protest, Chinda emphasized that the minority caucus should have the choice to select candidates internally within their political parties, arguing that imposing a particular mode of primary elections constitutes undue interference in party administration. The walkout was a formal registration of their objection to the passage of Clause 84, which deals with primary election methods.
