Political Controversy Erupts as Nine New States Created in Nigeria in 1991

In August 1991, Ibrahim Babangida announced the creation of nine new states in Nigeria, marking a significant political restructuring. The decision was influenced by lobbying efforts involving various stakeholders, including traditional rulers, wives of top government officials, and senior military members.

The choice of state capitals and boundaries sparked debates and disagreements, notably in the Delta region where the creation of a separate state from Bendel State caused tensions. Fred Agbeyegb, a key figure in the movement for Delta State's creation, played a role in calming the situation in Asaba.
