Sons of Deceased Lawmakers Win Kano By-Elections

In the recent by-elections held in Kano State, Aminu Sa'ad and Nabil Daneji, sons of deceased lawmakers, won seats representing the All Progressives Congress (APC). Aminu Sa'ad secured 8,975 votes in Ungogo, while Nabil Daneji received 7,484 votes in Kano Municipal.

The combined voter turnout was notably low, with only about 17,000 votes cast across the constituencies, a sharp decline from the 60,000 votes cast in the 2023 general elections. This decline has raised questions about citizen engagement in the democratic process.

The elections followed the tragic deaths of two serving lawmakers, which prompted the APC to nominate their sons to honor their legacies. Despite the switch from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the APC, the elections were conducted peacefully, with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf commending the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the orderly conduct.

The absence of major opposition parties like the NNPP and the People's Democratic Party (PDP) contributed to the low voter turnout.
