Ethical Journalism's Role in Protecting Children in Conflict

During a media workshop aimed at preventing the recruitment of children into armed conflict, Omar Alihashi, a counsellor at the Canadian High Commission in Nigeria, called for stronger collaboration among governments, communities, civil society groups, security actors, and media to protect children affected by armed conflict. He warned that children face profound challenges that extend beyond immediate violence.

The workshop aimed to enhance journalists' understanding of the issues and to provide a platform for sharing expertise on child protection. Mr.

Offiong Nsa from the Dallaire Institute for Children, Peace and Security described children in armed conflict as victims of grievous human rights violations, emphasizing the need to shift public narratives to portray them as potential agents of peace rather than mere victims. Ethical, child-centered reporting is crucial for exposing hidden recruitment networks and shaping public opinion to influence policy and ultimately end cycles of violence.
