NBA Crisis: Allegations of Bias and Legal Disputes Emerge

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) is currently in crisis due to litigations and allegations of bias against its leadership, particularly concerning the electoral process for the upcoming 2026 national elections. The Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, intervened in the dispute, which has escalated to a lawsuit pending in the Oyo State High Court.

A report from a committee revealed significant concerns regarding the neutrality of the NBA leadership and the electoral committee, suggesting that the electoral process has been undermined. The committee, led by former NBA president Chief Wole Olanipekun, recommended postponing the elections and overhauling the electoral process.

However, Paul Usoro, a member of the committee, filed a dissenting report, arguing that the committee overstepped its mandate. The NBA president, Mazi Afam Osigwe, publicly rejected the Attorney General's position, asserting the association's autonomy in regulating its elections.

The situation remains contentious as the NBA navigates these internal disputes.
