Nigeria's Boxing Team Fails to Medal at 2026 Commonwealth Games

At the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Nigeria's boxing team, consisting of six fighters, did not win any medals, highlighting a troubling decline in the sport's performance. Blessing Orakwe was Nigeria's last hope, reaching the women's 70kg quarter-finals but losing to Australia's Lekeisha Pergoliti.

This disappointing outcome is particularly significant given the historical importance of boxing to Nigeria, which has won 42 Commonwealth boxing medals, including 13 golds. The country's first Olympic medal came from boxing in 1964 when Nojim Maiyegun won bronze, followed by other successes in subsequent Olympics.

In contrast, wrestling was not represented at the Games due to the Glasgow organizers' decision to reduce the number of sports included in the final program. Emmanuel Obisia, a former world number two welterweight, criticized the administration and coaching quality within Nigerian boxing, citing poor appointments and inadequate planning as contributing factors to the decline.
