Eddie Howe Departs as Newcastle United Head Coach

Eddie Howe has left his position as head coach of Newcastle United with immediate effect, as reported by BBC Sport on Thursday. The decision came after discussions between Howe and the club’s hierarchy, with the 48-year-old reportedly contemplating his future at St James’ Park in recent weeks.

Newcastle finished 12th in the Premier League last season, losing 17 of 38 matches, which increased pressure on Howe. His final match was a 4-1 defeat to Bristol City in a pre-season friendly.

Sources indicate that Howe was surprised by the club's transfer activities this summer, particularly after the departure of striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool, despite Newcastle's significant investment of around £240 million on new players the previous year. Howe had previously decided to stay at the club despite anticipated player exits.

He took over from Steve Bruce in November 2021 and led Newcastle to significant achievements, including winning the 2025 Carabao Cup and securing Champions League qualification in 2023 and 2025.
