Shettima Advocates Human Rights for 2027 Elections

During an event organized by Punch Newspapers in Kaduna, Yerima Shettima, a prominent figure in the northern stakeholders' consultation initiative, stressed the critical role of human rights in fostering credible elections for the upcoming 2027 general elections. Speaking on the theme of human rights and democracy, Shettima noted that democracy cannot thrive when citizens' rights are suppressed.

He asserted that the protection of freedoms such as speech and assembly is essential for meaningful electoral participation. Shettima warned that failing to safeguard citizens' rights could reduce the 2027 elections to mere formalities rather than a true expression of the people's will.

He called for amendments to the electoral act to enhance transparency and voter confidence, emphasizing the need for the protection of lives and property, especially in northern Nigeria, where insecurity and economic hardship persist. Shettima also advocated for greater inclusion of women and youth in the political process and urged citizens to demand accountability from their leaders and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
