Atiku Abubakar Defends Opposition to Obasanjo's Third Term

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has responded to former President Olusegun Obasanjo's recent comments, asserting that he has no regrets about opposing Obasanjo's controversial third-term agenda. In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku described Obasanjo's remarks as an attempt to rewrite history.

He stated, “I am proud that I stood against the third-term agenda... I chose Nigeria over personal loyalty.” Atiku emphasized that the struggle against the third-term bid was about preserving Nigeria's constitutional democracy.

He also reflected on his support for Obasanjo during his imprisonment, claiming he played a significant role in Obasanjo's political comeback by providing assistance and mobilizing political structures. Despite the deterioration of their relationship, Atiku expressed that he does not regret helping Obasanjo, stating, “When God gives you the opportunity to lift another human being, you do so without expecting repayment.”.
