Kano Mass Wedding Initiative Benefits 1,500 Couples

Dantani Aruba, a beneficiary of the Kano State Government-sponsored mass wedding, expressed his happiness after marrying a third wife during the ceremony held on Saturday. The initiative, aimed at assisting individuals who cannot afford marriage costs, saw 1,500 couples married at a total expense of N1.5 billion under the leadership of Governor Yusuf Abba.

The program, coordinated by the Kano State Hisbah Board, targets low-income individuals, including widows, widowers, divorcees, spinsters, and bachelors. Each couple receives support that includes dowry, furniture, food items, and other essentials to help establish their homes.

Known as Auren Gata, this initiative was introduced in 2012 by former Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, starting with 100 couples, primarily widows and divorcees. The program has continued under successive administrations, accommodating an increasing number of beneficiaries, including those in polygamous marriages, in accordance with Islamic practices.
