Biodun Stephen Shares Painful Circumcision Experience

Biodun Stephen, an award-winning Nigerian filmmaker, recounted her experience with female circumcision during an interview on the Diari Naija Girl podcast. She revealed that the circumcision occurred when she was six years old, under the supervision of her grandmother.

Stephen described the process as part of her family's cultural practices, recalling being taken outside to a location where the procedure would take place. Initially, she was allowed to play and eat to feel comfortable, unaware of the impending procedure.

The next step involved a shower and lying down, after which she experienced intense pain that has remained a vivid memory over the years. At the time, no explanation was provided for the procedure.

Upon returning home, her mother offered comfort by rubbing her body and apologizing, but no further details were discussed. Stephen emphasized that the memory of the pain remains strong and reflected on how such practices are often passed down through generations without informing children of their purpose.
