Peter Obi Advocates Organized Approach to Fuel Subsidy Removal

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democrat Congress (NDC), disclosed that he would have approached the removal of the fuel subsidy in a more organized manner. He made these comments in an interview with Rufai Oseni, where he addressed claims of criticizing Bola Tinubu, the current president, regarding the subsidy removal that occurred during Tinubu's inauguration in 2023.

Obi emphasized that he would have first engaged with stakeholders in the petroleum sector before announcing the subsidy removal. He pointed out the need to understand the financial implications, including the exact amount spent on subsidies and the impact on exchange rates.

Obi expressed concern about the corruption surrounding subsidy removals and the adverse effects on the average Nigerian, noting that many even borrowed money to cope with the subsidy situation.
