Obi Questions Nigeria's Fuel Consumption Data Accuracy

Peter Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State and a presidential candidate, expressed concerns regarding Nigeria's fuel consumption statistics during an interview with Trust TV. He described the country's fuel consumption data as deeply flawed and questioned the accuracy of reports that suggest Nigeria consumes large volumes of petrol.

Obi argued that the existing subsidy structure creates opportunities for fraud and misuse. He drew a comparison with Pakistan, noting that despite having a similar population size, Pakistan reportedly consumes significantly less fuel.

Obi emphasized that beyond the removal of fuel subsidies, which was enacted by President Bola Tinubu on May 29, 2023, there is a critical need to examine fuel consumption figures to eliminate loopholes that allow for abuse within the system. The removal of the subsidy led to a sharp increase in petrol prices and transport fares, affecting Nigerians significantly.
