Ibadan High Chief, Veteran Journalist Lekan Alabi Dies at 76

On Saturday morning in Lagos, Oloye Lekan Alabi died at 76. This respected traditional chief and seasoned journalist held the title of Abese Olubadan.

Adeola Oloko, serving as media aide to Oba Rashidi Ladoja (the reigning Olubadan of Ibadanland), issued the announcement of his passing. Alabi's professional history included roles as press secretary to several former Oyo State governors.

He gained recognition as a public affairs analyst with strong ties to Yoruba cultural preservation. The Olubadan commended him as a remarkable figure whose lifetime devotion to journalism and safeguarding Ibadan's traditions significantly shaped Oyo State.

On the same day, Governor Seyi Makinde released a statement mourning Alabi's death, calling it a substantial loss for Nigeria and Oyo State alike. The governor's remarks emphasized Alabi's demonstrated integrity, sharp judgment, and unwavering commitment throughout his dual-sector career in public and private domains.

Makinde noted that leaders from many generations had valued his guidance and perspective. Funeral arrangements call for burial on Sunday at Alabi's Akobo residence (located in Lagelu Local Government Area, Oyo State) following Islamic rites.

The Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes and various socio-cultural groups have expressed grief alongside Governor Makinde and the Olubadan, joining the broader mourning for this venerable journalist's loss.
