Gambari Group Critiques Defections, Urges Security Review

The Savannah Centre for Diplomacy, Democracy and Development, led by Ibrahim Gambari, has condemned the recent wave of defections by elected government officials, stating that such actions are detrimental to Nigeria's democratic integrity. In a statement signed by the group's Executive Director, Sani Bala, the Centre highlighted the need for political parties to uphold democratic principles and ensure intra-party democracy.

The group also called on the government to address pressing issues such as insecurity and corruption, which threaten societal stability. They welcomed recent changes in the security sector, including the appointment of a new Minister of Defence and increased budget allocations for security.

However, they expressed deep concern over the rise of terrorism and banditry in southern states. The Centre urged the government to establish regional security outfits and enhance community policing to foster public trust and safety.

Furthermore, they emphasized the importance of restoring public confidence in the judiciary and addressing economic hardships faced by citizens.
