ICPC Opposes El-Rufai's Bail Application; Hearing Adjourned

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) filed a counter affidavit opposing former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai's fresh bail application in the Kaduna State High Court. Counsel Ubong Akpang, representing El-Rufai, notified the court of the new application, emphasizing the need to address his client's fundamental rights.

However, ICPC counsel Ibrahim Mukhtar argued against the bail, citing concerns of potential flight risk due to El-Rufai's influence and resources, as well as allegations of obstructing justice during an arrest attempt at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. Justice D.H.

Khobo ruled that the defense failed to adequately address new issues raised by the prosecution and emphasized that bail remains discretionary. The court ordered El-Rufai to remain in ICPC custody pending trial and adjourned the hearing to May 13, 2026, reaffirming the ICPC's commitment to due process in prosecuting corruption cases.
