IGP Disu Launches Committee for State Police Establishment

On a recent date, Inspector General of Police Olatunji Disu officiated the inauguration of a seven-member steering committee aimed at establishing state police in Nigeria. This initiative follows President Bola Tinubu's urgent call for the House of Representatives to amend the 1999 Constitution to accommodate a decentralized police system.

During an interfaith breakfast at the State House, President Tinubu emphasized the necessity of state police to effectively address the country's evolving security challenges. Disu highlighted that the committee's role is to clarify misconceptions surrounding state police, asserting that it should not be seen as a replacement for the Nigeria Police Force but as a complementary structure within a coordinated national security framework.

The committee includes notable members such as Prof. Olu Ogunsakin, CP Bode O jajuni, and others. Its mandate involves reviewing existing police models, assessing community security needs, and developing a robust operational framework for state police, which aims to enhance local intelligence and foster stronger relationships between law enforcement and citizens.
