IGP Disu Supports Responsible Recording of Police Officers

The Nigeria Police Force clarified that Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Olatunji Disu is not opposed to citizens recording police officers during their public duties. Aliyu Giwa, the Force New Media Officer, stated that Disu's primary concern is the misuse of recordings, especially when encounters are manipulated for social media entertainment.

Giwa emphasized that responsible recordings can enhance accountability and protect officers from false allegations. He urged the public to differentiate between legitimate documentation and exploitation of police encounters.

Giwa also mentioned that police officers retain their rights to dignity and privacy despite their roles. Disu's comments should not be interpreted as a blanket rejection of filming police officers, but rather a caution against misuse.

Additionally, body cameras are being considered to promote accountable policing. This clarification followed a meeting with the Nigerian Bar Association leadership, where the issue of recording police officers was discussed.
