Police Clarifies IG Disu's Stance on Recording Officers

The Nigeria Police Force, through New Media Officer Aliyu Giwa, clarified that Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu does not oppose the recording of police officers by citizens. Instead, Disu's concern lies in the potential misuse of these recordings, particularly when officers are provoked or ridiculed.

Giwa emphasized that the Police are not attempting to shield officers from accountability or deny citizens their rights. He stated that responsible documentation can benefit both citizens and police, aiding in accountability and protecting officers from false allegations.

Giwa also mentioned that police officers retain their dignity and privacy even while in uniform. The clarification followed criticism of the IG's comments, with Giwa responding that the IG's message focused on misuse rather than a blanket rejection of recording practices.

He confirmed that body cameras are being considered for accountable policing and urged constructive dialogue between the Police and citizens to achieve a more professional Police Force and a safer Nigeria.
