IGP Disu Removes Akin Fakorede from Police Monitoring Unit

Olatunji Disu, the Inspector General of Police, has officially removed Akin Fakorede from his role as the head of the Police Monitoring Unit, which is based at the Force Headquarters in Abuja. Fakorede was appointed to this position in December 2024 by former Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun.

His tenure attracted significant criticism, particularly from civil society organizations, due to allegations of links to extrajudicial killings and electoral interference during his time as head of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad. Additionally, there were concerns regarding his involvement in disputes with investors at River Park Estate in Abuja, which led to confrontations with journalists during protests in January 2026.

The removal of Fakorede coincides with the recent appointment of Olatunji Disu as Inspector General of Police, and it follows public criticism from Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, regarding allegations of brutality and electoral interference associated with Fakorede.
