Peter Obi Denies Anambra Debt Claims, Vows to Stop Campaigning

Peter Obi, the 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, released a statement on Tuesday denying allegations from the Anambra State government that he left behind debts, including a ₦2 billion ecological loan and unpaid salaries, when his tenure ended. Obi vowed to cease campaigning if anyone could substantiate these claims.

The Anambra State government, led by Governor Charles Soludo, stated that it is repaying loans from previous administrations, including those of Obi and former governor Willie Obiano. State Commissioner for Finance, Izuchukwu Okafor, discussed the financial commitments inherited by the current administration.

In response, Obi asserted that at the time of handover, the state owed nothing in salaries, gratuities, or pensions, nor did it owe contractors for completed projects. He revealed that the ₦2 billion ecological fund was reserved for his successor and provided the bank account details where the funds were held, showing a balance of over ₦2.13 billion, along with an additional ₦75 billion in savings.
