Illegal Dumping Persists Along Agege Railway Corridor

Illegal dumping of refuse persists along the railway corridor in Agege, Lagos, despite ongoing clean-up efforts by the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC). A visit to the area revealed heaps of plastic waste, food remnants, and household waste along the railway tracks, raising public health and environmental concerns.

Oyeniran Prince, a local government official, stated that indiscriminate dumping has continued for nearly two years, attributing responsibility for the corridor's maintenance to the NRC rather than the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA). He noted that while railway workers regularly clear the area, residents continue to dump waste, often ignoring a nearby waste container.

Other residents, including Joshua Osagie and Adewale Akinyemi, acknowledged some improvements due to increased monitoring and warned against the health risks posed by the refuse. Commuter Grace Oladipo remarked that while the situation has improved, it remains unresolved, urging continued government monitoring and enforcement against illegal dumping.
