Wike Defends Political Style, Distinguishes Faith from Politics

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, defended his political approach during a special media chat in Port Harcourt on Saturday. He stated that his Christian faith does not necessitate him to behave like a cleric, emphasizing that politics and religion operate under different principles.

Wike dismissed suggestions that he should emulate his father, a gospel preacher, arguing that his identity as a Christian does not make him a pastor. He drew parallels from his family, stating that just because he is a lawyer does not mean his son, whose mother is a judge, is also a lawyer.

Wike stressed that each profession has its own standards and that political conduct cannot be judged by the same criteria as religious ministry. His comments were made in the context of ongoing criticism regarding his political style, particularly following a rift with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, with claims that Wike's actions are motivated by a desire to maintain control over the state's political structure.
