Oyo State Intensifies Fight Against Waste Disposal Issues

The Oyo State Government has issued a warning against indiscriminate waste disposal, emphasizing the need for environmental sanitation. Ademola Aderinto, leading the Environmental Sanitation Commission, conducted inspections along major roads in Ibadan, including Iwo Road, to assess the progress of ongoing refuse evacuation efforts.

The commission highlighted the unfortunate situation caused by non-compliance with environmental sanitation laws, where citizens are dumping refuse in road medians and drainage channels, creating hazards that obstruct water flow and contribute to flooding, particularly in commercial areas. Governor Seyi Makinde remains committed to safeguarding public health and promoting sustainable development.

The commission lamented the inadequate funding for evacuation exercises, which directly affects residents. Aderinto urged residents to work closely with accredited waste collectors and report challenges through the state’s complaint platform rather than taking matters into their own hands.

He warned of strict enforcement of environmental laws, noting that penalties for violations are already stipulated.
