INEC Chairman Calls for Discipline Ahead of Elections

Professor Joash Amupitan, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), called for discipline among staff in preparation for the upcoming governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun. During a special Eid el-Fitr message at INEC headquarters, Amupitan underscored the significance of integrity, patience, and empathy, particularly as Ramadan coincides with the Christian Lenten period.

He noted that INEC's workforce comprises 14,000 staff across 774 local government areas and emphasized staff welfare as a priority. At a recent iftar gathering, he reiterated the need for a zero-tolerance approach to misconduct to combat voter apathy and rebuild public trust.

Amupitan, who assumed office on October 23, 2025, aims to modernize INEC operations and enforce stricter adherence to the new electoral act, which includes the implementation of a bimodal voter accreditation system and the INEC result viewing portal. The upcoming elections are viewed as a critical test for electoral reforms ahead of the 2027 general elections.
