INEC Chair Calls for Stronger Laws to Protect Democracy

On Tuesday, during the 47th Founder’s Day Lecture at the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies held at the Ayo Ajomo Auditorium, Prof. Joash Amupitan, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), urged for a robust legal framework to address emerging governance challenges in Nigeria's rapidly evolving digital landscape.

He highlighted the significant impact of technological advancements on governance structures and the necessity for Nigeria's legal institutions to adapt in order to safeguard democratic processes. Amupitan warned of serious risks in the digital space, including misinformation and data breaches, particularly concerning artificial intelligence.

He emphasized that innovation should not outpace regulatory measures, which are essential to preserve the integrity of governance. Mr.

Theodor Maiyaki, a senior advocate, also stressed the importance of civic participation and cautioned against the potential undermining of democracy by unregulated technology. The event underscored the need for enhanced data protection and cybersecurity measures to strengthen public trust in governance.
