INEC Extends Voter Registration Deadline to July 2026

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced an extension of the nationwide voter registration exercise to July 24, 2026. This decision was made following a review of ongoing feedback from state offices, political parties, and civil society organizations.

The extension aims to provide eligible citizens with the opportunity to register ahead of future elections, with the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise set to commence on August 18, 2025. INEC Chairman Mohammed Kudu Haruna stated that the extension underscores the commission's commitment to ensuring every eligible Nigerian has a fair opportunity to register.

Additionally, INEC will introduce an online self-service registration portal for first-time voters on July 8, 2026. This portal will allow eligible Nigerians to initiate and complete their registration, including biometric capture, using personal devices without needing to visit INEC offices.

The system is designed to maintain the credibility and accuracy of the national voter register.
