INEC Calls for Enhanced Funding Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has appealed for better funding and improved staff welfare in anticipation of the 2027 general elections.

This appeal was made during a courtesy visit to the Chairman of the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), Dr. Moham Bello Shehu, in Abuja.

Amupitan highlighted the necessity for sustained funding to enhance electoral infrastructure and staff welfare, noting that inadequate remuneration has led to the loss of experienced personnel and a widening skills gap within the commission. He pointed out that the financial burden of conducting elections, including the upcoming presidential and national assembly elections scheduled for January 16, 2027, and the governorship elections on February 6, 2027, is significant.

He also mentioned that INEC conducted the Osun State governorship election on August 15, 2026, and received commendations for its consistent electoral conduct since 1999. RMAFC Chairman Shehu acknowledged INEC's challenges and pledged support for credible elections in 2027.
