INEC Calls for Enhanced Women's Representation in Politics

On September 9, 2026, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) convened a strategic engagement at Rockview Hotel Royale in Abuja, urging political parties to take actionable steps to improve women's representation in politics ahead of the 2027 general elections. Representing INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan, National Commissioner Prof. Rhoda Gumus emphasized that a democracy that mobilizes women as voters but restricts their pathways to leadership has not fully realized its potential.

In the 2023 General Election, women constituted 47.52% of registered voters, yet only 10.15% of candidates for major elective positions were women. Prof. Gumus called for practical support for female candidates in various areas, including access to party structures and campaign resources.

Dr. Rose Oriaran-Anthony, represented by Lakunuya Dorothy Bello, stressed the need for collective action from political parties to advance women's political participation, outlining objectives such as securing measurable commitments and increasing visibility for female candidates.
