INEC Warns of 'Security Risks' as Voter Registration Stalls in 4 Borno LGAs, Shares New Plan

INEC has warned of security risks in four local government areas (LGAs) in Borno state, leading to a halt in voter registration. The affected LGAs are Abadam, Guzamala, and Marte.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Abubakar Ahmed Aji, stated that the prevailing insecurity in the area made it unsafe to operate the usual registration offices. Instead, temporary registration points have been set up in safer locations.

The voter registration process will now take place in three stages, starting from August 28, 2025, and ending on August 30, 2026. Aji emphasized the importance of the exercise as a civic responsibility and encouraged eligible residents to participate actively.

Meanwhile, INEC's interim leadership, led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has appointed new officers, including Senator David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola. However, there are still procedural lapses and internal disputes within the party, causing delays.
