Infantino Gains Support from South American Football Leaders

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has gained renewed support from several South American football chiefs during his visit to Cali, Colombia, for the inauguration of President Abelardo de la Espriella. This support comes amid increasing pressure on Infantino's presidency following criticism of FIFA's recent decision to allow private investment in the World Cup, which was abandoned last week.

Alejandro Dominguez, president of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL), defended Infantino, stating that his contributions should not be overlooked, even amidst disagreements. The Argentine and Paraguayan football associations, along with Venezuela and Ecuador, have also pledged their support for Infantino.

Ecuadorean federation chief Francisco Egas Larreategui expressed confidence in Infantino and the current FIFA leadership. This backing is crucial as Infantino prepares for the FIFA presidential election in March, where he aims for a fourth and final term.

However, opposition remains strong in Europe, particularly from UEFA, which threatens to boycott the World Cup.
