CAF Backs Infantino Amid Global Criticism of Investment Plan

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has reaffirmed its support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino amid widespread backlash from other continents regarding his failed World Cup investment plan. Infantino recently abandoned his proposal to create the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), which involved selling 20% of a FIFA arm for $4.2 billion to private firms, after facing severe criticism from European, North American, and Asian football officials.

European football authorities even threatened sanctions against FIFA for any participation in the global tournament as Infantino reconsidered his approach. Despite this, Infantino, who is seeking a second term, retains strong backing from CAF and its 54 member associations.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe described Infantino as a "true friend" of African football, highlighting his support over the years. The solidarity from Africa is largely due to Infantino's development funding, which is crucial for supporting football infrastructure and initiatives in regions with limited government and sponsorship support.

The next FIFA presidential election is set for 2027.
