NLC: Inflation Erodes Workers' Pay, Urgent Action Needed

In an interview on Tuesday in Abuja, the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ajaero, highlighted the detrimental impact of inflation on workers' salaries, asserting that a ₦1 million salary holds little value without a strong naira. He pointed out that rising inflation continues to erode workers' purchasing power, making it increasingly difficult for them to afford basic necessities such as food, transport, and housing.

Ajaero discussed the upcoming review of the national minimum wage, emphasizing adherence to legal processes and timelines for negotiations. He called for urgent government action to cushion the effects of inflation, particularly as rising fuel prices exacerbate living costs.

The NLC is also engaging with relevant stakeholders to address pension issues and ensure better coordination among pension groups. Ajaero reaffirmed the NLC's commitment to advocating for policies that improve worker welfare and stabilize the economy, while expressing hope for effective implementation of measures to support civil servants.
