Insecurity Drives Health Workers to Relocate from Nigeria

Sabir, the Chief Medical Director of UDUTH, stated that insecurity is forcing health workers to relocate, contributing to a growing trend of brain drain. Many professionals are moving to countries like Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom, leading to a depletion of skilled personnel in Nigeria's healthcare system.

This situation complicates the recruitment of health workers, despite efforts by non-governmental organizations to sustain the workforce. Sabir noted that the hospital is managing to maintain its workforce through internal training programs.

However, insecurity presents severe challenges, including poor electricity supply, which is a major constraint affecting hospital operations. The hospital requires 24-hour electricity to function effectively, but erratic supply and high tariffs increase operational costs.

Additionally, overcrowding in tertiary hospitals overwhelms patient care, with some patients being treated on the floor. Despite these challenges, the hospital has made significant progress in infrastructure and service delivery, including upgrades to critical units and the acquisition of modern equipment.
