UK MPs Warn Insecurity Threatens Nigeria Partnership

The UK Parliament’s International Development Committee released a report indicating that the UK-Nigeria development partnership, initiated in 2024, faces significant threats from insecurity, poor governance, and humanitarian needs. The committee described the partnership as a "grand strategic bet for the UK," aimed at modernizing Nigeria's economy and reducing its reliance on humanitarian aid.

However, it warned that without a comprehensive strategy to address humanitarian crises, displacement, and instability, the anticipated mutual benefits may not be realized. The report urged the UK Government to clarify its measures to support Nigeria in managing its humanitarian responsibilities and recommended establishing a monitoring framework for the humanitarian-development-peace nexus in Nigeria.

Sarah Champion, Chair of the International Development Committee, acknowledged the partnership's potential but cautioned that its success is not guaranteed without addressing the underlying challenges.
